Nilson Matta has long been considered one of Brazil’s best bass players and DownBeat Magazine called him “a powerhouse bass player.” Since his arrival in New York in 1985 he has become the first call of many of the top US musicians including Joe Henderson, Paquito D’Rivera, Slide Hampton, Mark Murphy, Nancy Wilson, Paul Winter, Claudio Roditi, Gato Barbieri, Yo Yo Ma, Kenny Barron and many others. He is a member of a number of long standing ensembles including one of the best Brazilian Jazz groups in the world, Trio Da Paz, with fellow Brazilians, Romero Lubambo and Duduka da Fonseca.
In addition to Nilson’s long history touring and recording, he has taught extensively as well. In 1995 he began teaching at The Collective in New York City and was on the faculty there until 2002. He has taught workshops and clinics all over the world. Nilson has been a resident artist at the Litchfield Jazz Camp since 2009.
