Alvin R. Atkinson, Jr. grew up singing and playing music alongside his parents who were the directors of the gospel choir at their church and his love of jazz began with a Stan Getz and Elvin Jones recording. His many performances include an international tour with The Rhythm Road, sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jazz Ambassador-tour sponsored by the Kennedy Center, various jazz festivals, on television for Emeril Live and even the White House. He has worked with Nnenna Freelon, Paquito D'Rivera, Benny Green, Ellis Marsalis, Jimmy Health, Roy Hargrove, Frank Wess, Vanessa Rubin, Wycliffe Gordon and many others. He teaches for Jazz at Lincoln Center's Middle School Jazz Academy, offers private instruction at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and is a former adjunct professor at the University of Manitoba and UNC Wilmington. Alvin has been a resident artist at the Litchfield Jazz Camp since 2007.
