This year for the first time in its history, the festival is hosting two amateur jams on site, both on Sunday afternoon, August 11. Saxophonist Don Braden, a featured artist on the Sunday lineup, will run one jam for adult amateurs and another for 13 and unders both to be held on the Festival’s second stage. Braden who has toured the world with Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Tony Williams, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Haynes, and many others, has been Music Director for the Litchfield Jazz Camp for 16 years. He also teaches at the Prins Claus Conservatoire in the Netherlands, runs NJPAC's Wells Fargo Jazz For Teens and leads the Harvard University Monday Jazz Band.
Individuals wishing to participate in any of the jams are invited to bring their instruments and join in the fun. No advance notice is necessary. The festival events will be announced from the Mainstage, and interested attendees are asked to proceed to the second stage tent at that time. All players are welcome. In the spirit of Litchfield Jazz Camp, anyone is welcome to play: there is no requirement to be great, just to play for the love of it. To participate in the jams at the Festival on Sunday you must be a ticket holder for that day.
The 2013 Litchfield Jazz Festival features Grammy nominee Gregory Porter, the great Latin Jazz bandleader, Eddie Palmieri, saxophonists Don Braden, Eric Alexander and Gary Smulyan, pianists Geri Allen, Orrin Evans and Harold Mabern, Broadway superstar vocalist Christine Ebersole, and many more.
