There's a silver lining in the Brussels Jazz Orchestra's withdrawal from the Litchfield Jazz Festival lineup: It opened up a spot for legendary trombonist Curtis Fuller, who'll perform in the Saturday 3:30 p.m. time slot. I don't use the term "legend" lightly: in addition to recording more than 30 albums as a bandleader, Fuller — a one-time member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers — played on John Coltrane's "Blue Train," Yusef Lateef's "Jazz For the Thinker," Jackie McLean's "A Long Drink of the Blues" and countless other recordings, including nine albums with Blakey released between 1961 and '64.

Now in his 80s, Fuller still performs and teaches at the New York State Summer School of the Arts School of Jazz Studies. Backing the trombonist in Litchfield will be bassist Nat Reeves, drummer Joe Farnsworth, saxophonist Kris Jensen and pianist Rick Germanson.

In a press release, artistic director Vita Muir said she was sad to lose the Brussels Jazz Orchestra but "jumped at the opportunity" to book Fuller.

Friday's Main Stage artists include vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant (7:45 p.m.) and the Cyrus Chestnut Trio (9:15 p.m.).

A pair of sextets — the Carmen Staaf Sextet (noon) and the Claudio Roditi Brazilian Jazz Sextet (1:45 p.m) — precede Fuller's set on Saturday, followed by London-based singer Anthony Strong (6 p.m.) and some gospel-infused smooth jazz from saxophonist Kirk Whalum (7:45 p.m.).

Sunday sets by the Litchfield Jazz Orchestra (noon), bassist Mario Pavone's Street Songs / Accordian Project (1:45 p.m.), saxophonist Jimmy Greene and his Quartet (3:45 p.m.), the Mike Stern Band (5:30 p.m.) and soprano saxophonist/bandleader Jane Bunnett (7:15 p.m) — who'll be flanked by all-female Cuban sextet Maqueque — round out a terrific weekend of music in the Litchfield Hills.

THE 19TH ANNUAL LITCHFIELD JAZZ FESTIVAL runs Friday to Sunday, Aug. 8 to 10, at the Goshen Fairgrounds. Tickets start at $40. Information: litchfieldjazzfest.com.
