On Sunday, April 25th, friends of The Festival came together at the home of Bob and Carol Lenz in South Kent to enjoy an Afternoon of Jazz & Friends. A Special Preview of the 15th Anniversary with a performance by Aaron Weinstein which raised over $5000 for the Litchfield Jazz Camp Schoalrship Fund.
Party goers also got to hear a stellar group of Litchfield Jazz Camp students and teachers including Don Braden
, LJC Music Director, saxophone, Albert Rivera
, saxophone, Nicole Zuraitis
, vocals, Zwe La-Pere
, bass, Joe Miterko
, piano, Robin Baytas
, drums and Jacob Rego
, trumpet. The party was the kick-start of the Litchfield Jazz Camp Scholarship Fund.
The fund had its start with three gifts made last summer, by the Joe Williams Every Day Fund, Jazzed4Life and Faye & James Preston of the Kent Village Barn Shops. Over the last 14 years Litchfield Jazz Camp has granted 25% of its students need-based scholarships annually. That support last year was $97,000. A portion of these funds have been made available to us by a State of Connecticut Department of Education program. However, as we all know, any granted funds are vulnerable. So we have set out to establish a fund which will make it possible for us to continue to support students in need with or without such grant funds.
The best way to ensure a future for our musically talented youngsters is to secure that future ourselves with the help of patrons like those who attend this event.
A special thanks to Bob and Carol Lenz, LPA's Board of Directors
, the musicians, and all our friends old and new. Thank also to Sunny and Mike Halperin, Robert and Martha Bernstein, Nancy Ross and David Henderson for their support of Aaron performance at the party. And thanks to the following for their recent contributions to the scholarship fund: Rod Pleasants and Steve Godwin, Christine Aiezza, Frank and Stacey Cicero, Albert Coker, Anne and Robert Faris, Charles and Jane Family Fund, Dick and Ann Martin, George McCabe and Peter and Laura Rothschild.
