Dave Stryker grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and moved to New York City in 1980. He has a wealth of knowledge having played with Jack McDuff, Stanley Turrentine, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, and led his own groups since his arrival on the New York scene. So it's no wonder that DownBeat invited him to write an article for their readers.
Featured in the July issue of DownBeat, Dave's article, "The 'Minor Sub' Approach to Improving Over Dominant 7ths," features detailed examples and a look into his childhood inspiration. He stressed "how important it is to listen to the masters if you want to learn the language of jazz. The fastest way to improve your playing is by listening to records and transcribing solos."
