Joris Teepe

Joris Teepe is a jazz bassist (acoustic & electric) and was born in 1962 in The Netherlands. He didn’t get into jazz until he was 18 years old playing in bands with friends from high school and college. After graduating at the Conservatory in The Netherlands he moved to New York and he has been living there ever since. In 2012 he decided due to personal circumstances to also have a house in Amsterdam and he is now living in both cities.

He has been playing with many of the world’s top artists in Jazz. Very influential to his career was a 9 year stint with drummer Rashied Ali with whom he traveled around the world. In his long discography you can hear him play with Chris Potter, Randy Brecker, Tom Harrell, Benny Golson, John Abercrombie, Tim Armacost and Sonny Fortune.

In addition to all the recordings Teepe has made as a sideman, he has recorded 15 CD’s as a leader or co-leader. His newest album (2017) is co-led with saxophonist Don Braden and is currently high in the US jazz charts.

Joris Teepe has been arranging and composing for singers and small jazz groups, but also for Big Band and Symphony Orchestra. He leads his own Big Band in New York City, for which he simultaneously conducts and plays bass.

Joris Teepe has been teaching jazz for 30 years to musicians of all instruments. He has been teaching many summer camps for many years, such as Orsara (Italy), Lichtfield (Connecticut) (since 2006), Peter Herbolzheimer (Germany) and Jazzinty (Slovenia). He is director of Jazz Studies at the Prince Claus Conservatory in the Netherlands and he is adjunct professor at the faculty of Queens College in New York. In addition he has been teaching private bass lessons and a weekly jazz workshop from his home in Brooklyn.
