- MATT WILSON – DRUMS
Matt Wilson is a first-call drummer for everyone who is anyone in jazz. He also leads his own award-winning bands, tours internationally and is a celebrity clinician. A long-time friend of Litchfield Jazz and a member of the Litchfield Jazz Camp faculty, it seemed natural to invite him to play on the Litchfield Jazz Presents series at the Waterbury Theater’s Poli Club. The date: June 7, for two shows, 7 & 9 PM.
When the Camp’s and Festival’s Founder and Artistic Director, Vita Muir, phoned Wilson to discuss which of his ensembles he thought would fit the Poli setting best he took a New York minute to respond. He, like Muir, is a “talent scout” and a mentor at heart. So, Wilson announced he’d like to play with some outstanding members of his up-and-coming club. For the Poli date, he selected saxophonist Awan Jenkins, guitarist Spencer Hoefert and bassist Conway Campbell, and, with his spot-on sense of humor, dubbed the group Matt Wilson & Permission Slip in honor of their youth.
Wilson has appeared at the Litchfield Jazz Festival 19 times in 18 years with various groups; his quartet, his quartet plus strings, his Arts & Crafts group and with Mario Pavone, Dewey Redman, Bill Mays, Denny Zeitlin, Dena DeRose, Lee Konitz, Helio Alves, in a Salute to George Coleman with Gary Smulyan and Eric Alexander, Smulyan’s Baritone Summit and in a Tribute to the great drummer Charli Persip. Matt has been a resident artist at Litchfield Jazz Camp since 2010.
