Remembering Zakir Hussain: A Beloved Performer and Musical Visionary
With deep sadness, we share the passing of Zakir Hussain, a tabla legend and a beloved member of the global music community. Hussain passed away on December 15, 2024, at the age of 73, leaving behind a legacy that transformed Indian classical music and touched audiences worldwide.
Hussain graced the Litchfield Jazz Festival stage in 2010, performing in a breathtaking trio alongside Béla Fleck and Edgar Meyer. Their blend of tabla, banjo, and bass created an unforgettable performance that showcased Hussain’s ability to bridge musical traditions and inspire audiences with his artistry and humanity. After the concert concluded all three artists stayed patiently to answer questions from eager Litchfield Jazz Camp students who, we have no doubt, will remember this always.
“This is music’s appeal, not mine. I am a worshipper of music, who presents it in front of people,” Hussain said to BBC in 2016. Throughout his life, he championed the next generation of musicians, using his platform to elevate young talent and inspire new audiences. His humility and reverence for music were ever-present, as he shared its beauty with the world.
Renowned for his passion, innovation, and generosity, Hussain leaves an enduring legacy as one of the most influential musicians of our time. He will be remembered not only for his remarkable talent but also for the profound connections he made through music.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans around the world. Rest in peace, Zakir Hussain. We will think of you always as a part of the Litchfield Jazz family.
