Saxophonist Dan Moretti was bitten by the performance bug at the age of 12 when his All-State Band played the Newport Jazz Festival. By the time the 70s rolled around he was playing with Motown stars like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations and others. Honing his recording chops, he self-produced a jazz-fusion record, Sometime Inside, released by Black Hawk Records of San Francisco, the label of Phil Woods and Stan Getz.
With his career off to a strong start, Dan toured of Russia in 1989. Home again in Providence, RI, he was “crowned” Head of the Jazz Renaissance and received every citation the State, the City and the regional press could bestow. In 1996, he was hired by Berklee College of Music in Boston where he serves to this day, 26 years later, as a full Professor.
Throughout his career Dan has continued to tour internationally, record, conduct clinics, and co- author texts that are academic staples, the 2010 Essential Grooves for Sher Music with Matthew Nicholl and Oscar Stagnaro, among them. A short list of Dan’s collaborators includes Dr, John, Mike Stern, Omar Hakim, Jimmy Cobb, Dave Samuels, Dave Liebman, Nicolas Peyton, Robert Plant, Stevie Nicks, Chaka Khan, George Duke and others.
Dan’s love of all styles of jazz has shaped to his work in straight ahead, latin, funk and soul.
He has 19 recordings as a leader including an award winning 2011 project with a traditional Italian Orchestra, The Piccola Orchestra La Viola. Its release took him to Italy where he toured the work.
Dan’s latest release (January 2025), Dan Moretti & Brazilia, is a Celebration of the music of Wayne Shorter in Latin-Jazz Styles. It features bandmates Oscar Stagnaro, bass, Ernesto Diaz, percussion, Steve Langone, drums, and Maxim Lubarsky, piano. Presented by Litchfield Jazz Festival, in conjunction with New England Arts & Entertainment, at the Poli Club, Palace Theater, Waterbury, CT, May 16, at 7 & 9 PM. Dan Moretti is a Yamaha and Vandoren artist and a BMI affiliated composer.
