Litchfield Jazz Festival and its fans enjoyed 21 years of great jazz this past weekend. The weather was gorgeous both days in spite of dire predictions. We also marked the 20th anniversary of Litchfield Jazz Camp, celebrating with the Scat & Scramble Jazz Brunch fundraiser on Sunday morning. Pictured here are our Founder, Vita Muir, and the talented pianist Brandon Goldberg. Brandon, a 10 year old from Florida, attended camp and played at the Brunch. He is amazingly talented and a sweetheart who we believe will go anywhere he wants when he grows up. His mom Ella took this picture! More »
"Litchfield Jazz Festival (LJF) -- a then at-risk brainchild of the fearless cultural crusader Vita Muir -- would survive its infancy to become an annual crown jewel among Connecticut’s premier summer arts and entertainment events. For that matter, who back then would have bet that what seemed like Muir’s noble but precarious pipe dream would still be alive and well in 2016, about to launch its 21st season this weekend on its historic stomping grounds at the Goshen Fairgrounds in Goshen?" Last week, after years of lobbying for a deeper involvement in jazz at Yale School of Music by interested undergraduates, Dean Robert Blocker has announced Yale is moving in the direction endorsed most recently by the Yale Undergraduate Jazz Collective, a vocal student coalition. Blocker has assigned Prof. Thomas Duffy to reconstitute the Yale Jazz Ensemble open to all students and has hired Wayne Escoffery to teach an improvisation course. The Collective are “confident” that this initiative marks the start of a transformation in Yale’s music curriculum and an expansion of opportunities for performance and academic study of jazz at Yale. He had the flu and still gave 150% to all his fans here! Now April 30 has been designated International Jazz Day, thanks to the United Nations and the Thelonious Monk Institute. More »

Evoking memories through music can be a straightforward affair: Play a tune as it was originally rendered, and the thoughts, feelings, sights and smells associated with a specific time and place come rushing back. But for Mario Pavone, 74, the process is not so simple. More »
WNPR's Where We Live
Mario Pavone and Jimmy Greene are both veterans of Connecticut's jazz scene -- having grown up here, decades apart -- and both deciding to make the state their home. But they're also two of the music's leading voices: Greene, a tenor saxophonist with a big sound that recalls Coltrane and Rollins, and Pavone, a bassist whose full sound recalls the late Charlie Haden -- another bassist who straddled the avant-garde and the accessible. There's a silver lining in the Brussels Jazz Orchestra's withdrawal from the Litchfield Jazz Festival lineup: It opened up a spot for legendary trombonist Curtis Fuller, who'll perform in the Saturday 3:30 p.m. time slot. I don't use the term "legend" lightly: in addition to recording more than 30 albums as a bandleader, Fuller — a one-time member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers — played on John Coltrane's "Blue Train," Yusef Lateef's "Jazz For the Thinker," Jackie McLean's "A Long Drink of the Blues" and countless other recordings, including nine albums with Blakey released between 1961 and '64.
