Litchfield Performing Arts invites you to the concluding concert of Swinging Saturdays, an arts education program based at the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven. The free event takes place on June 6 at 6:30 p.m. and is open to all.
The evening will feature live jazz performances by our distinguished faculty who all participated in the Swinging Saturdays program. Kris Allen (saxophone), Albert Rivera (soprano sax), Andrew Hadro (baritone sax), Jen Allen (piano), Avery Sharpe (bass), and Ian Carroll (drums). The New York City-based Matthew Westerby Dance Company will also perform, along with selected student participants showcasing what they’ve learned throughout the season.
Swinging Saturdays was created by Litchfield Performing Arts and its Litchfield Jazz Camp to introduce students ages 12 through high school from the greater New Haven region to jazz, America’s original music. Made possible by a grant from the Connecticut State Department of Education, the program has been entirely free of charge for all participants.
Over the course of the season, students explored jazz history and the legends who shaped it, from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald to trombonist JJ Johnson. Weekly guest artists brought those stories to life, while instrumental classes and recording workshops gave students the chance to compose original lyrics and melodies. Those recordings will be featured during the June 6 concert. Students also received introductory instruction in tap, hip-hop, and Latin dance styles from the Matthew Westerby Dance Company, which brings over 20 years of arts education experience. Field trips to Yale University rounded out the program, giving many students their first look at a college campus and its world-class music facilities.
Tickets are free. Reserve your spot at the link below.
