Trio Da Paz

Featuring three of Brazil’s most in-demand musicians, Trio da Paz updates the infectious spirit of jazz-oriented Brazilian music. Formed in 1990 by Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta and Duduka da Fonseca,  all three players are seasoned masters of both jazz and Brazilian music with impressive resumes.

The list of legendary musicians with whom the Trio’s members have recorded and performed is extensive. Guitarist Romero Lubambo appears regularly with vocalist Dianne Reeves worldwide. He has also collaborated with Michael Brecker, John Pizzarelli, Grover Washington, Jr. and Kathleen Battle.  Bassist Nilson Matta has worked with Joe Henderson, Don Pullen, Yo-Yo Ma and Paul Winter. Grammy nominated drummer Duduka da Fonseca’s has appeared with Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, John Scofield and Tom Harrell. Trio da Paz as a group has recorded and performed with Charlie Byrd, Herbie Mann, Lee Konitz, Kenny Barron and Nana Vasconcelos, among others.

The Trio’s critically acclaimed, debut recording Brazil From The Inside (1992), with special guests Herbie Mann, Claudio Roditi, Joanne Brackeen and Maucha Adnet, received the Indie award for best album of the year. They followed that success with a an ambitious concept album, an exploration of the themes from Black Orpheus, the film soundtrack that set Brazilian music on a new course. Their third release, Partido Out, is a mix of spirited original compositions fusing jazz and Brazilian music in a

fresh and exciting way. This CD won the Jazz Journalists Association award for Brasilian Jazz Album of the Year (2002).

CAFÉ (2002) includes special performances by Cesar Camargo Mariano and Grammy Award winners Dianne Reeves and Joe Lovano. Their latest release is Zoho

Critic Howard Mandel said of the Trio, “If North Americans hadn’t invented jazz, then surely Brazilians such as the three talented young men (in Trio da Paz) would have invented something like it.”

This is a third appearance for Trio Da Paz at Litchfield, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to present them once more.
