The National Museum of American History designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month. They chose April because so many jazz greats were born this month. Among them are Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Gerry Mulligan, and Tito Puente. Tito closed the 1998 Litchfield Jazz Festival with his Latin Jazz Ensemble in a performance we will never forget. He had the flu and still gave 150% to all his fans here! Now April 30 has been designated International Jazz Day, thanks to the United Nations and the Thelonious Monk Institute.

This year, Washington, D.C., has been named the International Jazz Day 2016 Global Host City! There are 195 participating organizations putting on performances, and WE are joining them with our Jazz & Friends benefit event on April 24—early but welcome just the same.  International Jazz Day touches the lives of millions of people on every single continent, from Vanuatu to Mauritania, Iceland to Peru, Abu Dhabi to South Africa, carrying the jazz message of peace.
